Video conferencing is the technique of conducting a conference between two or more participants at different sites irrespective of their demographic locations by using computer networks to transmit audio and video data. For example, a point-to-point video conferencing system works much like a video telephone, between two people only. Each participant has a video camera, microphone, and speakers mounted on his or her computer. As the two video participants speak to each other, their voices are carried over the network and delivered to the other’s speakers, and whatever images the video camera captures appear in a window on the other participant’s monitor. The other technique is multipoint videoconferencing. Multipoint video conferencing allows three or more participants to sit in a virtual conference room and communicate with the other participants of the video conference as if they were sitting right in front of you or next to each other. Technology that existed up to the mid 90s, made costs of video conferencing prohibitively expensive for most organizations, but that has changed drastically. Many experts and businessmen are of the belief that video conferencing will be one of the fastest-growing segments of the computer industry in coming years.

If you know how video phones work, then you should also be familiar with web based video conferencing. You call someone from anywhere in the world and you can see each other on the TV screen. In fact, video conferencing is built to work best when used for big conferences, not for normal clients.

A lot of companies decided to use video conferencing as a tool for everyday use. There are always disadvantages and advantages when it comes to video conferences, and you should take them all into consideration.

Advantages

1. Get a hold of anyone you need at any point during the day or night. You don’t need to travel long distances, so the time differences aren’t as important now as they used to be.

2. If all you need is a short talk, then a phone call is sufficient, but if you want a full fledged conference with people from different locations, then you need a web based video conference. For example, you can make a conference where businessman from Tokyo, New York and Amsterdam all participate at the same time, hearing and seeing each other perfectly.

3. You can use any type of visual program like PowerPoint to share information with the other people in the room, and everyone will have the feeling that they’re together, sharing information and ideas freely.

4. Using the whiteboards that come with the software, they can all collaborate on new ideas in the same space. This way, they can create plans or do new slogans and designs.

5. In some cases, you can even grant access to a computer to everyone, and they can see what happens on it. The more advanced the service, the more actions can be done, such as changing documents and typing from other PC’s connected to the web conference. If your company needs people to collaborate on projects, then this can help greatly.

Disadvantages

1. The largest problem that people might have with is the price of web conferencing. Still, there are some cheaper options out there, if you can give up some of the advanced features.

If you do need the advanced features, you will save money in time, by paying more now, instead of paying for travelling costs and hotels for people flying in. As fuel becomes more expensive, the price of web conferencing becomes more affordable when you take into consideration the money you save.

Video conferencing solutions allow participants in a meeting to see and hear each other, making for an interactive conference. Video conferencing is also used for educational training, surveillance, emergency response and security. When video conferencing is used correctly, it has a significant effect on the way people do business and the success of the business. Decisions can be made faster and deals sealed quicker. This enables you to stay in front of your competitors.

Another obvious benefit of using video conferencing is that it allows people, especially business owners, to meet with their clients from any location, This obviously saves a great deal of time and money that can be better spent for educational training, etc. Video conferencing is also used to provide customer service and for sales.

Unfortunately, with the pluses that come with video conferencing, there are some limitations. This sophisticated technology requires months to design a network and install conferencing equipment. The initial cost is very high. A conference room has to be available for the video system to be installed, and the system might be underutilized. Also, the system itself will need at least one staff person to run the technical part of any conference. This could also be an under utilization of staff time.

There are still problems with this video technology, thus there can be a lot of wasted time that can cause disruptions, etc. It can also sometimes be difficult to really see how a particular client or group may be reacting via video conferencing.

Photoshopping is a process of manipulation of digital photographs. It has become more popular after a fall in price of digital imaging software and hardware. Photoshopping is now a widely popular pastime on the internet. Many of the editors considers this image fakery to be a form of new creative art, when photoshopping is applied as a means of funny spoof. It is although a good pastime of part-time pixel pushers; even working persons are getting involved into this act to shape up their talent and to take a break from the seriousness as well as from the monotony of the scheduled work.

Photoshop contests, or commonly called as Photochop contests, is a game played online, in which the person using an internet forum or website sends an initial image generally a photograph and then asks other candidates to manipulate the images. Such editing of images can be done by using some commonly used image editing software, like Corel Photopaint, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, The GIMP etc. The players of such online Photoshop contests find it very interesting not only as their favorite pastime but also as a means of earning quick money.

In such Photoshop Contests, the users are generally asked to edit the image in a funny way, or if specifically mentioned then according to the given theme. Then, the users move away and manipulate the image as asked and send the resulting image back to the website. When versions of the image are submitted by all users at the website, they have to vote for the best image. The candidate whose resulting image gets the maximum number of votes wins that Photoshop contest.

In many such Photoshop contests, a major element of the humour involves the practice of clichés. Such incredible repetition of a joke from an image often results in the replacement of the initial joke by the clichés itself. Such pictures can also sometimes become major internet phenomena. Most commonly used clichés are as follows:

• Domo-kun

• A foreign tourist on the WTC with an airplane about to hit the building.

• Admiral Ackbar and his phrase “It’s a trap”.

• A picture of untidy James Brown.

• “All your base are belong to us”.

• An (often obscure) reference to goatse.cx.

• The famous O rly owl.

• A picture with the captions ‘X is watching you poop.”

• The usage of a photo which looks like a lolcat.

• The famous Preved Bear- from the customized John Lurie’s work of art, Bear Surprise, is to be found in videos, photographs and pictures

Nowadays, such Photoshop contests are able to find increasing candidates in a large no. of blogs. The Photoshop contests are gaining immense popularity, mainly due to the underlying humor or taunts which are generally associated with the edited images. They act as a stress buster for many and a source of income for some.

So….

“Telepresence”.

I get a kick out of seeing the so called “video conferencing experts” struggle to define this simple word. So far the most common and widely available definition of “Telepresence” is from Wikipedia. It states:

Telepresence refers to a set of Technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location.”

That simple sentence says it all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, VC (video conferencing) experts all have opinions gained from their years and years in the VC industry. They’ve been there, done that and have gained all the knowledge required to become wizards of their industry. That same “vast amount of gained knowledge” they’ve amassed is also part of the reason we’ve been waiting for VC to prove itself since the video phone in 1964. Instead of running to a common goal, they’re running in circles. Smart people do that ya’ know.

I think they’ve all missed the point. There, I said it. That’s sure to make more than a few people cringe. Oh well. Here’s another observation. It’s probably not their job to “define” Telepresence anyway. They’re looking so past the point, kind of like a brain surgeon that can’t change a flat tire. They’re thinking it has to do with video conferencing, 3-D, Pepper’s Ghost, video over IP or even 4-D magic. Lenses, lighting, immersiveness, latency, HD, Plasma, Bandwidth, etc. The question lingers – at what point does video conferencing become Telepresence? Is it 70ms latency? Video over IP? HD immersiveness? Right?

Wrong. All wrong.

How about it doesn’t matter? Video conferencing (in all past and future reincarnations) is just a facet of “Telepresence”. 3-D imaging? Another facet. What we watched on historical CNN Election night with the “hologram” camera trick? Another facet.

Simply put: Tele – “to or at a distance” and Presence – “the impressive manner or appearance of a person”. Telepresence. End of story, case closed.

The companies that have figured out that the word “Telepresence” is more about marketing then an actual definition are going to soar, while others that are still trying to define it are going to get kicked to the curb. It doesn’t matter who invented it. It does matter who’s going to capitalize on it. Telepresence in its essence is the boss barking orders via a walkie talkie (or string and cup for that matter). It doesn’t matter if it’s 720i HD at 30 fps, or 3-D Pepper’s Ghost technology, or 300 cameras building a trick hologram. Those methods are just the means to convey Telepresence, not Telepresence defined.

Presently, Cisco is running with the ball because of their TV commercials and Internet play. Marketing 101. They didn’t invent Telepresence, but they’ve been marketing it. They’re not waiting on unified conferencing “Standards”, they’re not waiting on a definition and they’re surely not waiting on anybody or anything. They are forging ahead with their Telepresence related products. Remember, if you believe like I do that Telepresence is not about “video conferencing”, but about “all” the different technologies that can make up “Telepresence”, you can change the tire and get on down the road instead of getting your gray matter mired in the mud thinking up a definition that won’t please all of the people anyway.

Sometimes we’re so smart, we’re stupid.

Just my two cents worth. Take it or leave it.

Sonja Mishek asked:

What is Web Video Conferencing?

Put simply – it’s a way for you to meet “live” in-person computer to computer from anywhere you are. Or have online meetings where you share documents or applications or give a PowerPoint presentation. It can be almost like T.V.!

Do I need software?

There are several web video conferencing providers that are 100% web-based. There is no software for you or your guests to download, install, or configure so anyone, anywhere can attend your meeting.

Will It Interfere or Cause Problems on My Network?

If you have a 100% web-based system, it’s impossible for it to interfere with your network in any way.

How much does it cost?

The cost of conferencing providers has come down significantly. You can get it for as little as $79 dollars a month for unlimited meetings for up to 50 guests. That makes it affordable for every business on a budget.

What Equipment Do I Need?

You’ll need a desktop or laptop, a web camera and microphone if you want to be seen and heard, and most important – a high speed internet connection. The quality of your meeting is directly related to your internet speed.

What if I don’t have a webcam?

No problem. You only need a webcam if you want to be seen.

How much do Web cameras cost?

You can buy web cameras for as little as $29 dollars. Be aware though, the quality of your video depends on the quality of your web cam. Look for a web video conferencing provider that includes the web cameras.

Do guests have to download any software to attend a meeting?

Not if you have a 100%, web based provider.

Is it difficult to use and host a meeting?

Absolutely not. It only takes 4 clicks of the mouse to set up a meeting. With some providers, an automatic email invitation is sent to your guests so they have an easy direct link to your meeting. Simple enough for a 5th grader!

What about audio – is there a separate fee for that?

No – it’s automatically included.

Will I be charged for more guests?

You will have a set number of guests you are allowed to have in a meeting based on the package you purchase. I recommend packages that allow up to 50 guests so you’ll never be charged for additional guests.

I hope these answer most of your questions about web video conferencing.
